Groove Pizza (2018 - present)
Groove Pizza drum machine for students and beginners that serves as an easy, fun, and hand-on introduction to electronic music and music production! I’ve been involved in this project for several years. Groove Pizza began in 2016 as a web app, which I helped prototype at the NYU MusEd Lab.
Since 2018, I’ve worked with Boston-based engineer Cole Maholowitz on turning Groove Pizza into a physical drum machine. The Groove Pizza represents a one bar drum loop broken into eighth notes. Beats are placed in the loop by placing pepperonis into the holes on the surface of the Pizza. Each slice represents a different beat and each concentric ring of topping-holes represents a different sound. The Pizza has six drum kits, tempo, swing, and volume controls, and can send MIDI via USB to any music production software on a computer. We’ve gone through several iterations of prototypes and plan to KickStart the physical Groove Pizza in early 2021. Follow along at groovepizza.com for updates!
